888 Park Avenue
New York, New York
888 Park Avenue is a prewar, large and attractive apartment building built in 1926 and converted to a cooperative in 1953. It has a richly decorated, red-brick facade and an interesting cornice. The building has a two-story limestone base and a very deep and impressive lobby. This intimate 14 story building has only 48 homes. It was designed by Schwartz & Gross, whose other buildings on the avenue include 470, 525, 885, 910, 911, 930, 941, 970, 983, 1045, 1070, 1095, 1125 and 1165.
In the spring of 2015, a multi-phase facade restoration and terrace replacement project began. The work included cleaning of the facades, replacement of the deteriorated limestone at the building decorative lower floors as well as the replacement of 90 decorative stones at the ornate protruding cornice. The project team worked with the Landmark Preservation Commission to ensure that all precast replacement stones mimic the unique tooled pattern of the original limestone. Additional work included the restoration of wood windows, masonry repairs at both the multicolored base building brick and the homogenous penthouse masonry facade. Replacement of the large penthouse terrace including installation of a new liquid membrane roof completed trestoration of this historically significatant apartment house.
